SHEDDING INK

Coffee and Cigarettes

At the risk of ridicule from some of my film school compatriots, here's Coffee and Cigarettes in a nutshell: several vignettes in which two people sit down at a table, drink coffee, smoke some cigs, and have absolutely nothing interesting to say to each other. More specifically, two of the scenes are mildly amusing. One pairs Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, who keep taking unnecessary umbruge with everything the other says. The other features Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan giving their cute take on the Hollywood power play. Bill Murray drops in for a cameo in a third scene that isn't nearly as funny as you'd think it might be. None of the scenes measure up to Jarmusch's brilliant Night on Earth or pack the quirky punch of Dead Man. It's just dull.

DVD Extras

There's not much here either, just a dull outtake with Bill Murray, a music video of little interest, and an amusing interview with Taylor Meade, a veteran New York stage actor who has a part in the film.
