SHEDDING INK

Wedding Crashers

Wedding Crashers is vulgar, crude, occasionally tasteless and very, very funny. Laughing out loud is the ultimate mark of a successful comedy, and I must have done that 30 or 40 times. Yes, there's plenty about the movie that makes no sense: some characters aren't followed through completely, others make choices that belie their nature, and despite a two-hour running time, continuity apparently fell victim to the cutting room floor in several places. But the jokes and performances are almost all effective (with the exception of an unusually poor cameo from Will Ferrell, who seemed to be trying too hard), especially the rambling, hipster, bullshit artist portrayed by Vaughn, who continues his comedic hit streak. Just once it would be nice to see someone shake up this tired formula, but it's tough to ask much more than you get from a movie that is crystal clear in its sophomoric intentions.
